Karen is an early childhood consultant, associate lecturer and freelance writer who has extensive experience in a broad range of services within the early childhood care and education context.

She established Karen Hope Consulting in 2014 with the aim of providing a disruptive approach to professional development workshops and teaching, This approach aims to challenge dominant discourses and ‘taken for granted’ practices.

Karen’s consultancy practice, teaching and writing is strongly influenced by the Reggio Emilia project and this is reflected in her work and writing as a point of reference, resource, inspiration and difference.

The delivery of sustainable professional development that results in real change is a key feature of her work.

I spent the month of January in Reggio Emilia, a city located in the Emilia Romagna region in the northern part of Italy. During my visit, the conversations, workshops and early learning centre visits I experienced were shared with me in English by highly skilled interpreters who made great efforts to ensure that visitors understood the complexity and the intent of what is being communicated.

Early childhood educators are required to provide rich, meaningful information about learning and development to families, to the community and to each other, that demonstrates a way of articulating and evidencing what they are doing, how they are doing it and what it all means. Part of this information is pedagogical documentation. This type of documentation makes learning and development visible and provides educators with assessment opportunities.

‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ is a classic film from 1985, about a high school kid who decides to take a day off school. It’s always been one of my favourites. At this point in time, as the world finds itself in the most extraordinary of circumstances, many of us have been called on to develop new and different ways of working and staying connected. As I have grappled with some of these particular challenges, one question Ferris asks at the beginning of the film rings through my mind - “How could I possibly be expected to handle school on a day like this?”.
