KU Cammeray Preschool celebrates 60th anniversary

KU Cammeray Preschool celebrated 60 years of providing quality early childhood education and care to families in its local area through a community event, held last month.

An afternoon tea celebration, the event was attended by children, families and staff from the centre, as well as Chair of the KU Children’s Services Board, Laura Hartley, who attended KU Cammeray as a preschooler, and KU CEO, Christine Legg.

KU Cammeray Director Sarah Robinson said it was a wonderful afternoon, and a special milestone for the preschool.

“Uncle Laurie visited and gave an Acknowledgement of Country before we had speeches recognising the history of the preschool. We then planted a tree commemorating the event and finished with afternoon tea and activities for the children including weaving and a Kindifarm,” she added.

As well as celebrating their milestone anniversary, the event also afforded the preschool the opportunity to officially open their Street Library, which allows children and families in the community to donate and borrow books as they like.

The library was opened by Sonia Ashikian, who has worked at KU Cammeray for 26 years, and Felicity Gavaghan, who has a 50-year history with the centre as a student teacher, TAFE teacher, parent and grandparent.

“The children were very excited to open our Street Library which will enable us to share our love of books with the local community,” Ms Robinson said.

“Engaging with books provides so many benefits to young children and helps to foster a love of storytelling and reading which will be valuable for them as they move into primary school and beyond.”

For those located in NSW who are seeking more information about the preschool, which is currently open for enrolments of children aged three to five years of age, please contact Ms Robinson via phone on 02 9929 8985.
